Bowlby, 44 juvenile delinquents

Bowlby interviewed 44 juvenile delinquents and 44 other non-delinquent children at the clininc where he worked. He found that 32% of the juvenile delinquents had affectionless psychopathy, lack of moral conscience. Most of these had suffered separation for at least 1 weak by the age of 5. Early life separation caused disrupted a child’s emotional development and damaged their personality and morality. Robertson, Short term deprivation

Aimed to see the effects of short term separation on an infant John a healthy 17month old baby was placed in a residential nursery for 9 days, behaviour was regularly checked After 9 days John went from being happy and content, to distressed, sad and irritated. Robertson concluded, short term deprivation affects infant detrimentally.

Schaffer and Emerson: Glasgow babies study

Aim: To find out the age at which attachments start and the intensity of attachments. Procedures: * Studied 60 babies from a working-class area of glasgow * They checked-up on them every four weeks for the first year and at 18 months. * Attachment was measured by separation anxiety and stranger anxiety. So it’s been a tough couple of days. Yesterday was a blur of reading notes on developmental psychology, and I had 40 names and dates to completely memorise in just four pages, not to mention all the rest of the notes that I had to get stuck in my brain on children’s eyewitness memory. Easily the most difficult exam I have EVER done, I had 8 pages of handwritten notes transposing down only two of the topics we could have been revising. Jack is almost 2!

In a few days, my sweet son will be 2. Looking back, he’s achieved so much. Today he mastered 3-puzzle jigsaws. At the last United Square toy fair, I bought him a wooden box full of lovely animal jigsaws. Only today did he bring it out to play and in a blink, he mastered them all. His vocabulary is increasing exponentially. Today he learnt the phrase “hold the bar” (while coming down stairs). He can easily say complete sentences by himself, but even with new phrases, I don’t need to say 2-3 w
